Story: My name is Tamyra Walker and I am a 7th grade math
teacher who has a creative streak. Bag designing has become a recent endeavor
that has evolved out of a passion for crochet. Currently, I am exploring leather
work in order to perfect the fusion of the two mediums, and broaden my own
creative horizons. When I started to crochet bags, I noticed that acrylic
and wool yarn did not stand up to the daily wear and tear that handbags
experience. After taking a trip to a specialty yarn store, I realized that hemp
was far superior and that it gave my bags a really organic quality that really
complemented the leather. It's this organic quality and the hand crafting of a
leather and crochet bag that makes my expressions unique. My bag is designed for
all purveyors of natural beauty. New challenges are my continued inspiration.
My bag was born out of a partnership with a master leather craftsmen who is also
a handbag designer. I walked into his studio and expressed a desire to combine
leather and crochet, and he guided me through the process. Before I knew it, I
had designed and crafted 10 bags. When I first started crocheting I was making
hats and although I love making hats I find their appeal to limited. I always
knew that beautiful crocheted bag would appeal to almost everyone, and that by
adding leather I could increase the bag's utility.
All my bags are one of kind. I know everybody says that, but mine are one of a
kind because I loathe making the same thing twice. Even if I try to replicate
something somehow it always comes out a little different.
My designer nightmare was quite an experience. I crafted and shipped a bag in a
matter of 36 hours. Everything that could go wrong did! I was up all night, and
I don't even think the customer was even aware of what it took to get her that
bag! Oh well. It was still a good experience. My greatest achievement was
crafting my first bag, but I also felt great sense of accomplishment when I
shipped one of my bags to Norway. The process of making something and giving
what you made to someone else is an amazing experience. It's a very real and
special way to connect with other human beings.
