I am a retired graphic artist, 75 years old, and have become addicted to making handbags and I spend several hours each day working at what I consider a labor of love. I find it extremely satisfying to be able to design and produce things that appeal to people who appreciate handcrafted, one-of-a-kind bags. Right now I am “thinking Spring” for my newest designs (not easy to do here in the cold North East in upstate New York where I live).

I use tapestry type drapery and upholstery fabrics, faux suede and faux leathers for my bags which are often embellished with unique buttons and ornaments. I like to “let the fabric speak to me” when starting a new design. The patterns and textures inspire me, often suggesting the shape or size of the bag design. I started making bags several years ago after attending a presentation by a nationally known handbag maker at my local American Sewing Guild chapter. I was recently retired, just beginning to sew with some skill and I liked the idea of incorporating my knowledge of graphics with sewing - and - I needed something creative to do. I would hope that what interests people to purchase my bags is the quality of fabrics, workmanship and individual design. I strive to be current with what is fashionable, without losing the unique quality that says “handcrafted”.

I don’t really have a design nightmare story, however I have had a lot of frustrating sewing experiences. If I’m not happy with the way a bag is going together I will make changes along the way - I like to call this “design as you go”. I think my greatest achievement is the satisfaction of doing something creative and knowing that my work is being sold by vendors, such as Museum shops and small boutiques who realize the value of hand-crafted products.
