| My name is Christian, and I live way down south in a
little town called New Orleans (Go Saints!). I make handbags and wallets. Right
now, I sell my bags on Etsy, but I plan to start doing craft fair and
approaching brick and mortar stores as soon as I have enough stock built up.I
work mostly with suiting fabrics and cotton prints. I love plaids, pinstripes,
and large scale floral prints. My bags are meant for sophisticated women who
prefer functional classic beauty to flashy trends. I'm all about beautiful
silhouettes, and fabrics that don't over-power them. I am a self taught
sewer and designer, and all of my bags are completely handmade by me. I do
everything from pattern making to packing and shipping.
Before I started making handbags, I was creating custom lingerie and working
with nothing but stretchy knit fabrics. Then, about a year ago, a nurse friend
of mine asked me to make her a pair of scrubs. I had some fabric left over, so I
made myself a shopping bag. It was the first bag I'd ever made. I was so happy
with the process and the results, that I immediately gave up the lingerie and
threw myself into making bags.
I don't think I have a design nightmare story. Not having the benefit of design
school, there have definitely been things that were more difficult than others
to figure out on my own. I must have ruined fifteen bags before I finally
figured out how to put a zipper in the top of a bag without any raw edges or
zipper tape sticking out. Still, when I finally got it done, the result was
totally worth all of that trial and error.
I'm relatively new to bag making, so pretty much everything I do feels like my
greatest achievement. I suppose my latest greatest achievement would be getting
noticed by HB101! Hopefully, my next one will be winning the handmade category
in the Handbag Designer awards. :) Bag making, for me, is like working out a
puzzle. Figuring out what the pattern pieces should look like and how they fit
together. It's all food for my analytical mind.
