| Topstitching on faux suede not only holds seam allowances flat and crisp, it emphasizes structural lines. Here are some tips to consider: • Finger press seams since steam and heat from the iron can damage the fabric’s surface. Trim seam allowances to help reduce bulk and make it easier to topstitch over several thicknesses of faux suede. • Topstitch seams close to the folded or seamed edge to avoid puckers and keep the seams secure and flat. • Use topstitching or heavy duty thread for topstitching, which will make the topstitching more pronounced. A darker color or high contrast color thread will provide a casual appearance, while a matching color or lighter thread color will give a more formal look. Try using two strands of regular machine sewing thread, if you are having difficulty finding a heavier weight thread in a desired color choice. • Select the smallest size topstitching needle possible for the thread weight being used. • Set the machine stitch length to 6-10 stitches per inch. • Do not backstitch, but rather tie end securely and hide the thread ends. • A blind hem foot with an edge guide can be used to help sew accurately and evenly along an edge. • To sew along curved edges, use the “needle down” feature on your machine. To begin turning around curves, keep the needle down, raise presser foot, pivot the fabric to adjust position, then lower the presser foot. Resume stitching, repeating the pivoting process along curved edge to keep the stitching lined up evenly along a curved edge. Stitching slowly will also help with accuracy and consistent stitch length. Topstitching on faux suede not only holds seam allowances flat and crisp, it emphasizes structural lines.
