DESIGNER OF THE DAY

Alexandra de Curtis

Alexandra de Curtis

Alexandra de Curtis took a winding path to bag design. Raised in Rome, Alexandra has also lived in San Francisco and London. After building a successful career in advertising and doing a stint at Vogue UK, Alexandra felt compelled to explore her more creative side. She enrolled at London’s Cordwainers College and then set up her first business, a line of stylish baby bags for busy, professional mothers. After the success of this venture, Alexandra expanded her line to include luxurious handbags and clutches. She is fond of rich colors and unusual materials – salmon skin is a particular favorite, a surprisingly soft eco-friendly material. In addition, Alexandra designs custom hardware for each bag, so every piece is distinctive and luxurious. Alexandra says she loves to choose the materials for each bag, examining countless samples of embossed leather, lambskin and more before finding the perfect materials.

Alexandra de Curtis handbags were born In order to meet the need of an ever changing fashion market and global economy; Alexandra's designs embody a chic elegance and represent today's concept of everyday luxury: premium products at a reasonable price. In 2005 she moved back to Italy and founded her first business, Alexandra Bee, after discovering a gap in the market for well organised and stylish baby changing bags. Her first collection was designed with working women and mothers in mind, while drawing inspiration from her travels and friends. Her main aim was to make women feel stylish and empowered, even while they lug all their baby paraphernalia around. Lovers of Alexandra Bee bags include Hollywood 'A' list stars - Courteney Cox, Angelina Jolie and Naomi Watts, as well as socialites, City high-fliers and busy mums alike. After the success of this venture, Alexandra launched her namesake line to include luxurious handbags, work totes and clutches.

Born to a German mother and Italian father, Alexandra de Curtis grew up in Rome, Italy and then moved to California where she graduated in Art History and Communication from Santa Clara University. After six years in the advertising industry, including stints at various advertising agencies in San Francisco and London, and an inspiring job at Vogue UK, Alexandra decided to take the plunge and set up her own business. She enrolled at London’s Cordwainers College to study Fashion Accessories.

Inspired by style icons such as Grace Kelly, Jaqueline Kennedy and Audrey Hepburn, Alexandra's label epitomises today's 'modern chic' woman; she is a lawyer, a manager, or a mother. But most importantly, the Alexandra de Curtis woman appreciates understated luxury and uses her accessories to add her individual style to any outfit.

She is fond of rich colors and unusual materials – salmon skin is her latest favorite, a surprisingly soft eco-friendly material. In addition, Alexandra designs custom hardware for each bag, so every piece is distinctive and luxurious. Her bags are handcrafted in Rome by a family of skilled artisans who have been working with leather since 1959. They are made with high quality Italian leathers, carefully hand-picked by the designer; Alexandra loves to choose the materials for each bag, examining countless samples of leathers, lambskin, embossed leather and more, before finding the perfect materials.

The Alexandra de Curtis line is growing on a global scale. We have a great following in Europe and Australia and look forward to launching our Spring/ Summer 2015 collection in America this year.
