LumillaMingus

After working in Haute Couture and Ready-to-Wear in Copenhagen, London, Paris and Los Angeles, Founder and Creative Director Lulu Johansen Eschelman was inspired to combine a contemporary European aesthetic with her discerning eye for quality, timeless design and function to create a one-of-a-kind custom Handbag line. Acknowledging a gap in the market for hand made luxury handbags, Lulu applied her love for quality and uniqueness to LumillaMingus. All LumillaMingus bags are made in California which allows Lulu and her creative team to partake in every aspect of the creative process of crafting each and every bag. Lulu designs for the contemporary woman with a strong focus on timeless designs, impeccable craftsmanship and quality, while never overlooking functionality. Lulu strongly believes in quality over quantity and therefore only produces a limited amount of each style.

Ever since Lulu worked w Haute Couture, she knew that she wanted to bring the same luxury and amazing handmade finishes to her own bag line. Lots of luxury brands start out doing apparel and add in bags - Lulu wanted her line to be all about bags. Women all over the world love accessories, especially bags, and replace them quite often. While Haute Couture has become for only a select few, there is a great market for high end, luxury bags. Lulu worked for several years perfecting the look of her brand, researching the market, doing tests bags and setting up an incredible creative team before she finally launch Lumilla Mingus in 2013.

Lulu has been fascinated with art and fashion her whole life, always appreciating fashion as an art form. After college she was accepted to an acclaimed fashion school in Denmark, but ended up taking a job for a Danish designer, and learned the craft of draping, hand making one of a kind gowns, while traveling to Paris and London from Copenhagen to be in the different markets. She grew to love and appreciate the hard work that goes in to making Haute Couture. At night Lulu attended the Royal Danish Academy, school of design, where she leaned the background for all great design. She later worked for a large American ready to wear company and was trained in US business as well as trend prediction, and partook in the design process.

"My inspiration is a mixture of my current life in California and my upbringing in Denmark. I have a very clean, modern taste, and very much appreciate simplicity, function and amazing quality. I strongly dislike anything mass produced, I wanted my line to reflect that. Each bag only gets produced in a limited amount, and we keep a wait list even before they hit stores. That way you feel like you own a special piece.

I only use cow hides, as that is a byproduct from the food industry. I do not like wasting anything, especially not from animals. I will never use skins from animals that were killed just to use their skin. For lining etc I mostly use suede as I like the soft, luxurious feel to it, and I want you to feel that when you reach for stuff inside the bags.

We are all about luxury, simplicity and function. Customers have started collecting bags from each collection, which is fantastic. Our customers love that while buying a luxury item from us a percentage of each bag goes to a select creative, healing program for children and mothers in need.

We just finished a big art room for children who's mothers are living at the Anne Douglas Center in Downtown Los Angeles, and we are working on a big art exhibition showcasing the art of the mothers there. All proceeds will help get an art program started for underprivileged children. It's all about making beautiful things and helping people is what it's all about."
