MARYLAI NEW YORK, established the end of 2012, is an unmistakable handbag collection of luxury leather handbags where high quality meets ultramodern edge. The bags are designed in New York and made by artisans with an old-world attention to detail. The designs portray the perfect balance of how eclectic and elegance is worn. Every bag is a work of art and is given a heart logo to represent the life and love given to each piece.
After 10 years of working in the NY Fashion Industry she took the leap of faith to follow her dreams of designing from her own point of view. She started sketching in her apartment kitchen table and creating her namesake brand of innovative luxury handbags.
Mary Lai the New York based designer behind the brand creates a collection that merges high quality with ultramodern edge. She studied at the Mason Gross School of the Arts and has spent the past decade honing her craft in the New York fashion industry designing handbags for Carlos Falchi, Be&D, Rachel Zoe, and Kathy Van Zeeland.
She finds inspiration from her surroundings and is passionate about all forms of art. This is a brand that reflects a seasoned designer with the creative drive of an artist working on what she loves.
Marylai Handbags are luxury leather bags. She uses a variety of leathers from goat, embossed cowhides, printed haircalf to lambskin. She will also layer in some novelty material like exotic python skins. Her approach to designing is getting hands-on by playing with leathers and sewing mockups till she comes up with something that is fresh and excites her.
Mary was awarded the Independent Handbag Designer Award in June 2013 for the Best Handmade Handbag, and also the American Express OPEN Rising Stars of Fashion Award in August 2013 at WWD MAGIC Market Week. The two awards covered the spectrum from an international competition with well over 1,000 applicants to a live handbag making competition performed in 2.5 days. Mary is an entrepreneur, a designer, and an artist, and she enjoys bringing her visions from concept to completion. She is also a 2014 IHDA finalist for two categories including the Best Handmade and the Guess Distinctly Denim Category.
