Kuku Big Bag is inspired first and foremost by contemporary designs and lifestyle. Starting in the Netherlands and eventually moving to the UK, Kuku Big Bag has been highly influenced by these cities and its creative culture, their love for functional design and most important of all, their products that are designed around their mobile, cycling culture. These influences of contemporary, minimalist, functional designs ideas eventually set the boundaries of the Kuku Big Bag creative language.

The Kuku Big Bag brand started in the kitchen of a shared house in the heart of London in 2013. Using a borrowed 1970's sewing machine, Kuku Big Bag began with a range of fabric tote bags. On one occasion, a friend offered a piece of nubuck leather and she embraced this new material and dived straight into experimenting with constructing a leather bag. Here, she realized that working with leather was her passion and she turned Kuku Big Bag into a leather accessories brand.

Candice Lau, designer/maker of Kuku Big Bag attended the leather bag making summer course at the London College of Fashion and the Alri Workshop in Hong Kong to learn the art of traditional leathercraft in 2012. She had shifted from a career in graphic design in advertising to product/accessories design and working primarily in traditional leatherwork.

In amongst the learning and travelling in London, Hong Kong and Amsterdam over the past years, she embraced the growing community of artists in Hong Kong and their strong desire to find their own creative identity, the Dutch and their love for unique, design pieces, and mobile cycling culture in both Amsterdam and London. Through these influences, she created her first line of Kuku Big Bag(s) of contemporary, minimalist, functional design, which ultimately set the boundaries of the Kuku Big Bag creative language.

Kuku Big Bag are made using veg-tanned leather sourced from European tanneries. Each piece is professionally crafted by one maker using the traditional method of saddle stitching.

Kuku Big Bag is growing steadily and is known for its unique production processes of using traditional leather working techniques. It is making its mark in the UK market and have recently expanded across the Netherlands. It proudly carries a strong story of traditional leather craftsmanship and that one dedicated maker has imbued his/her story into each bag, creating its individual essence.
