A biomedical engineer-turned bag engineer. Jenny is an artist by nature and an engineer by discipline, so her business is the fusion of her personal artistic aesthetic and the engineering principles she adopted throughout her education. Simplicity and versatility are defining characteristics of her design aesthetic; her designs are created with no excessive hardware and can be worn in various ways, including cross body.
Jenny started her brand in her college dorm room, while procrastinating on studying for biomedical engineering physiology exam. She bought a small sewing machine, some thread and fabric and sewed a simple fabric tote (one that she learned at the age of 6 with her mother on an antique singer sewing machine). It soon became an addiction. Ironically, earning a bachelors of science in biomedical engineering solidified what she really wanted to do: be her own boss.
Jenny learned to sew at the age of 6 with her mother on an antique Singer sewing machine. A simple tote made of canvas and lined with cotton was the start of Jenny's love for handmade handbags. It was in college, while studying to become a biomedical engineer, that Jenny rediscovered her love of designing, sewing, and handbags that she started her business from her dorm room and never looked back since!
"My designs are inspired by food, fashion and life in general. For example, after following my husband's favorite basketball team for a season, I couldnât help but think how cute it would be to bolt snap the three-point line to the center court line. Thus, I designed the Clutch. Another example includes the Ruche, which is inspired by a combination of a bubble skirt and a Chinese dumpling."
"I design my bags by sketching out the final silhouette, then reverse-engineering the design to create a template. I cut a whole leather hide into a stack of geometric shapes that culminate into a design when sewn, lined, and riveted. I try to standardize my templates so I use every inch of the beautiful materials I work with. Once a bag is ready, I take a brief moment to feel like a proud mom before giving it a final hug goodbye, and then packaging it to be shipped away to a loving new home."
Jenny N. Design is a one-woman, handmade business that values the relationship between maker and customer. The Jenny N. brand is an honest interpretation of the fashion, functionality, and versatility that her customers adore. Each bag is designed, crafted, and lovingly packaged by me, from start to finish, in my Pittsburgh studio. Each bag is created with great love and attention to detail.
