Bag Trends: The Magic of Grey by Pantone

Grey is ok. Who needs California sunshine when you have a color that matches everything?

Historically when money is tight and there is a concern about the longevity of a given color, some people have a tendency to play it safe with neutrals. For Summer 2009 neutrals in all areas of fashion are increasingly predominant. While at “fast fashion” retailers, we are seeing this trend in neutrals being shown with contrasting brights in accessories, at the higher end retailers we are seeing a return to the more basic shades of black and taupe as the complementary shades of choice for this trend. One color family, gray, however has been able to straddle both of these markets.

Gray is the middle ground between black and white, truly the perfect neutral. Gray is shade or shadow, mist and fog, so there can be a bit of mystery. It is this kind of ambiguity that lends an air of sophistication to the deeper grays, especially as they begin to approach black. Just as there are venerated statues, monuments and historical sites that are tinged with gray, many variations of gray are seen as classic and tasteful. There is also an implied quality attached to anything that is so long lasting.

Silver, inevitably paired with the light emanating from the moon, is the more exciting metallic sister to gray. The color of coins, jewelry and those pricier items with a silvery shimmery finish establish a perceived value to the finish wherever it is used. There is a certain fluidity of motion attached to silver. There is also an implied old world elegance to silver, especially in more rococo design, while at the same time, a silver finish can also speak of modernism. Currently we are seeing consumers attaching a clean, classy, streamlined stylishness to silver and perceiving it as cool in every sense of the word.
