Bernice Angelique FINALIST'S PROFILE

What country are your bags manufactured?
Namibia

Please explain how your bags are socially responsible?
I hire women from impoverished areas & provide them with training. I develop their skills so that they are at an artisan level.

Do you work with local/native artisans to design your bags?
I design the bags myself but do get feedback from the local ladies that I employ.

Why did you choose this country to have your bags made and what made you decided to give back?
I am originally from Cape Town, South Africa. I have always been aware of the importance of education & how it changes lives. I have always been fascinated at how entrepreneurship (if done the right way) can change communities & therefore countries. I am incredibly passionate about creating rewarding employment opportunities for women in Southern Africa.

How have your bags impacted this community?
I have currently only employed 2 women but have some exciting things in the pipeline & will be hiring again soon. I can only really tell you how my 2 employees lives have improved - the one lady was previously unemployed & was struggling to find work. She didn't have many skills & this is now improving substantially. The other lady I hired was employed in the leather industry but was earning a really low salary. Her salary is now 3 times more & she is starting to reach an artisan level.

Do you think you are giving back by producing there?
Yes, it might only be a small impact now but I dream of having a substantial effect on creating good employment opportunities for local women.
