Claire Patrick FINALIST'S PROFILE

What is your inspiration for this sketch?
My inspiration for this sketch was the design of GUESS?'s cross-body bags, as well as my obsession with magnets. I have incorporated the usage of magnets within most of my designs and I feel that magnets in this design give this bag an innovative edge.

Why did you select the particular materials to work within your sketch?
GUESS? originally made denim one of the main priorities to use, which I incorporated, as well as using a black leather trim for durability and contrast. I also love the functionality of magnets which was one of the main design driven elements I chose for this bag design.

What is your design background?
I am currently a Product Design student at Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles. I am a Junior, and throughout my years at Otis I have been building skill sets and design vocabularies that are helping me towards my end goal of becoming a Product Designer. I am mostly interested in the field of fashion accessories and jewelry design, but not limited from furniture and packaging design. I have always loved handbag design, and I have designed a few bags over the course of this past year so I can see myself within the handbag designing industry.

Do you currently design your own handbags collection? If so, would your GUESS? Design fit into your current line?
I currently design handbags for my own personal needs and project requirements for certain classes within my program. However I feel that my design aesthetic would fit within GUESS?'s current line. Given their use of patterns and laser cutting that they are utilizing in their current designs, which gives them an innovative feel, I feel that my bag can contribute to their line.

What materials do you normally work with?
I work with a wide range of materials, I can solder and weld metal, I often work with hard woods, and I also sew with Bernina's and industrial sewing machines with anything from canvas and denim, to leather.

What can you offer to the GUESS? aesthetic?
I believe I can offer a unique way to present and change bags functionality for an every day setting, for the everyday woman who has a love for handbags.
